How to Clean Gemstone Jewelry: The Safe Default Method
For almost every gemstone, the safest cleaning method is the simplest one: warm water, a drop of mild dish soap, and a soft brush. Soak the piece for a few minutes, gently brush behind the stone where oils collect, rinse in clean water, and pat dry with a lint-free cloth. That routine will not harm diamonds, sapphires, amethyst, garnet, or most other common gems.
The complications start when you reach for anything stronger — ultrasonic machines, steam cleaners, ammonia, jewelry dips. Those tools are safe for some stones and genuinely destructive to others, and the difference isn't always obvious from looking at the stone. A sapphire can ride through an ultrasonic cycle untouched; an emerald can come out visibly worse than it went in.

Why Cleaning Advice Has to Be Stone-Specific
Three properties determine how a gem should be cleaned, and they vary enormously from stone to stone.
Hardness. The Mohs hardness scale ranks minerals by scratch resistance from 1 to 10. Diamond sits at 10 and quartz at 7, but pearls fall around 2.5 to 4.5 and amber around 2 to 2.5 — soft enough that a stiff brush or abrasive paste can leave permanent scratches. Anything softer than about 7 also picks up scratches from ordinary household dust, which contains quartz.
Treatments. Most colored gemstones on the market are treated, and treatments change the rules. The large majority of emeralds are fracture-filled with oils or resins to improve clarity; heat and solvents can strip that filler out. Most sapphires and rubies are heat-treated, which is stable and generally harmless — but some rubies are additionally filled with lead glass, and those are fragile in ways an untreated ruby is not. Porosity and structure. Opals contain water within their structure. Turquoise is porous and often stabilized with resin. Pearls are layers of organic nacre. These stones absorb liquids, dry out, or react to chemicals in ways that solid crystalline gems don't.

The Universal Safe Method, Step by Step
This method is safe for nearly every gemstone, treated or untreated. The exceptions (pearls, opal doublets, and a few others) are covered below.
- Mix warm — not hot — water with a drop of mild dish soap. Skip anything labeled "antibacterial" with added ammonia, and never use hot water; sudden temperature changes can crack stones with internal fractures.
- Soak the piece for 5–10 minutes. This loosens the film of skin oil, lotion, and dust that dulls a stone's sparkle. For soft or porous stones, shorten the soak to a minute or skip it entirely.
- Brush gently with a soft toothbrush. Focus on the back of the stone and under the setting — that's where grime accumulates and where light enters the gem. Use light pressure; you're lifting film, not scrubbing a pan.
- Rinse in a bowl of clean water. Rinse over a bowl rather than an open drain. Rings are lost down sinks constantly, and a bowl costs nothing.
- Dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. Let the piece air-dry fully before returning it to a closed box, especially pieces with closed-back settings that can trap moisture.
For most jewelry worn regularly, doing this once every few weeks keeps stones bright. Between cleanings, a quick wipe with a soft cloth after wearing removes most skin oil before it builds up.
Ultrasonic and Steam Cleaners: Powerful, and Frequently the Wrong Choice
Ultrasonic cleaners work by vibrating a cleaning solution at high frequency, creating microscopic bubbles that scour dirt out of crevices. Steam cleaners blast debris away with pressurized hot vapor. Both are excellent for the stones that can handle them — and both can ruin the stones that can't.
Generally safe in an ultrasonic cleaner: diamonds, untreated or heat-treated sapphires and rubies, and most solid quartz gems like amethyst and citrine — provided the stones are free of significant fractures and are securely set. The vibration can loosen stones in worn prongs, so check settings first.
Never put these in an ultrasonic cleaner: emeralds, opals, pearls, turquoise, tanzanite, lapis lazuli, malachite, coral, amber, moonstone, or any stone that is fracture-filled, dyed, or assembled from layers (doublets and triplets). The vibration can widen internal fractures, strip fillers, and shatter fragile material.
Can you put emeralds in an ultrasonic cleaner? No. This deserves its own emphasis because it's one of the most common ways fine jewelry gets damaged at home. Nearly all emeralds contain natural internal fractures, and nearly all have been filled with oil or resin to conceal them. Ultrasonic vibration can force filler out of those fractures and can extend the fractures themselves — sometimes visibly whitening the stone in a single cycle. The same caution applies to steam. Emeralds get warm soapy water, a soft brush, a short contact time, and nothing else.
Steam cleaning follows roughly the same list: fine for diamonds and untreated corundum, risky to catastrophic for everything heat-sensitive, filled, or hydrous. When in doubt, the soapy-water method above cleans almost as well with none of the risk.

How to Clean Opal Jewelry
Solid opals tolerate a quick wash in mild soapy water with a soft cloth — but keep it brief, and never leave an opal soaking. Opal is hydrated silica and naturally contains water, and while normal wear is fine, prolonged soaking, heat, and very dry environments can all contribute to crazing, the network of fine cracks that permanently damages opals.
Doublets and triplets — thin opal slices glued to a backing, sometimes capped with quartz — must never be soaked at all. Water can seep between the layers, cloud the adhesive, and lift the assembly apart. Wipe them with a barely damp cloth and dry immediately. No ultrasonic, no steam, ever.
How to Clean Amethyst and Other Quartz Jewelry
Amethyst, citrine, smoky quartz, and rose quartz are among the easiest gems to care for. At Mohs 7, they resist scratching, they're rarely treated in ways that affect cleaning, and the standard soap-and-water method handles them perfectly. A securely set, fracture-free amethyst is generally fine in an ultrasonic cleaner too.
Two cautions: avoid heat, and avoid leaving amethyst in strong direct sunlight for long periods — its color can fade over time. Store it out of the sun and it will look the same in thirty years.
Pearls, Turquoise, and Other Delicate Stones
Organic and porous gems get the gentlest treatment of all: a soft cloth, barely dampened with plain water, and nothing else. Pearls in particular should be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off — hairspray, perfume, and cosmetics all attack nacre. Wipe pearls after each wearing, and have pearl strands restrung when the silk stretches or frays.
What Never to Touch Gemstone Jewelry
A short list worth memorizing, because each of these appears in well-meaning home-remedy advice:
- Bleach and chlorine — attacks gold alloys and can pit settings; remove rings before pools and hot tubs
- Ammonia-based cleaners — safe for plain diamonds in gold, damaging to pearls, opals, turquoise, and many treated stones
- Toothpaste — abrasive enough to scratch metal finishes and any stone softer than quartz
- Baking-soda scrubs — same problem, gentler marketing
- Boiling water — thermal shock can fracture included stones instantly
- Vinegar and other acids — dissolves pearls and coral, dulls porous stones
When to Let a Professional Handle It
Take jewelry to a bench jeweler rather than cleaning it yourself when a stone is visibly loose, when a fracture-filled stone has gone dull or whitish (emerald filler can be professionally replaced), when antique pieces have foil-backed or glued stones, or when you simply don't know what the stone is. A professional cleaning is inexpensive, and a jeweler will check prongs and settings while they're at it — which prevents the far more expensive problem of a lost stone.
